Discord
Post announcements to a channel in your Discord server, with images, video and link previews. Posts never ping @everyone. Each channel you add is one account on your plan.
Connect Discord
- Open Accounts, select Connect account and pick Discord.
- Click Choose a channel and sign in with Discord.
- Pick the server and the channel Refract posts to. Discord lists only servers where you have the Manage Webhooks permission (owners and admins have it). If the list says No items to show, ask a server admin for that permission, or have them connect the channel.
- Name the channel the way you want to see it in Refract (it starts as the webhook's name), then select Connect channel.
Or open the same dialog and paste a webhook link under Paste a webhook link instead. You find it in Discord under the channel's Settings › Integrations › Webhooks. Refract checks the link with Discord before it adds the channel.
Refract can only post to the channel you choose. Anyone with the webhook link can post there too, so keep it private. Refract never sees your Discord login or your messages. Client connect links can include Discord.
What you can post
- Message: up to 2,000 characters, with Discord's formatting.
- Images and video: up to 10 files, each up to 10 MB (JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV). A bigger video gets an offer to make it smaller. Alt text goes with each file.
- Link preview: put the link on its own line, so Discord shows the preview.
- Post as: your workspace name and logo, or a name and picture you choose in the Discord tab. Set a default for each channel in Accounts. Discord doesn't allow names with "discord" or "clyde" in them; Checks flags such a name while you write, and Accounts won't save it as a default.
Posts never ping @everyone, @here, roles or people, whatever the text says.
Limits
Refract sends at most 5 posts every 2 seconds to one channel and waits as long as Discord asks when it says to slow down.
Edit and remove
- Edit: yes. The text changes; the files stay. The Post as name and picture can't change after posting.
- Remove: yes. The message is deleted from the channel. A message already gone from Discord counts as removed.
Numbers
Discord doesn't share numbers. Analytics says so for Discord posts.
Every hour Refract checks each channel's webhook instead. If the webhook or the channel was deleted in Discord, the channel shows Signed out of Discord on the Accounts page before its posts are due, and the people who manage accounts get an email. If Discord is briefly down, nothing changes.
Errors and fixes
| What Refract says | What to do |
|---|---|
| The webhook was removed in Discord. Choose the channel again. | Select Reconnect Discord and choose the channel again, or paste a new webhook link. |
| Discord didn't accept that webhook link | Copy the whole link again from the channel's Integrations › Webhooks in Discord. |
| Discord didn't confirm it got the post | Check the channel in Discord. If the post isn't there, retry it. Refract never sends it twice on its own. |
| Discord didn't accept that Post as name | Pick a name without "discord" or "clyde". |
| Discord didn't accept the file because it's over 10 MB | Select Shrink and retry. |
| Discord asked us to slow down | Refract waits as long as Discord asks and tries again. |
