LinkedIn posts can be up to 3,000 characters, and the feed shows the first 210 characters or 3 lines before “…see more”. Most letters count as one and most emoji as two. Paste your post below to count it the way LinkedIn does.

How this count works

  • Most letters count as one and most emoji as two.
  • A line break counts as one character.
  • Mentions and hashtags count like any other text, the @ and # included.
  • Links count by their full length.

Your text never leaves your browser: nothing is sent anywhere or stored.

How LinkedIn counts characters.

LinkedIn counts text in UTF-16 units, the way many apps store it. Letters, spaces and most symbols count as one; most emoji count as two, an emoji with a skin tone as four, and joined emoji like families as more.
A few examples, counted the way LinkedIn counts them: “Refract” counts as 7, “👍” counts as 2, “👍🏽” counts as 4, “👨‍👩‍👧” counts as 8, “日本語” counts as 3 and “https://refract.social/pricing” counts as 30.
In the feed, LinkedIn shows the first 210 characters or 3 lines of a post, whichever comes first, and hides the rest behind a “more” link.

Questions and answers.

What is the LinkedIn character limit?

A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters. Most letters count as one, most emoji as two, and a line break as one.

Where does LinkedIn cut a post with “…see more”?

After the first 210 characters or 3 lines, whichever comes first. See it with the LinkedIn post preview.

Why do emoji count as two characters on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn counts most emoji as two characters, and an emoji with a skin tone or a joined emoji as more, so they use up the limit faster than letters.

Do line breaks count?

Yes, one character each. They also count toward the 3 lines the feed shows before “…see more”.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counter runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to Refract or stored.
