Instagram caption counter
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, and the feed shows only the first 125 characters or 2 lines before “… more”. Most emoji count as one character; a flag counts as two and joined emoji count as more. Paste your caption below to count it.
0 of 2,200 characters · 2,200 left
How this count works
- Most letters and emoji count as one; a flag counts as two and joined emoji (like families) as more.
- A line break counts as one character.
- Mentions and hashtags count like any other text, the @ and # included.
- Links count by their full length.
- Links in the text aren’t clickable on Instagram.
Your text never leaves your browser: nothing is sent anywhere or stored.
How Instagram counts characters.
Instagram counts Unicode characters. Most letters and emoji count as one, but an emoji built from several parts counts each part: a flag or an emoji with a skin tone counts as two, and a family counts every person in it and the joins between them.
A few examples, counted the way Instagram counts them: “Refract” counts as 7, “👍” counts as 1, “👍🏽” counts as 2, “👨👩👧” counts as 5, “日本語” counts as 3 and “https://refract.social/pricing” counts as 30.
In the feed, Instagram shows the first 125 characters or 2 lines of a post, whichever comes first, and hides the rest behind a “more” link.

Questions and answers.
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters. Most letters and emoji count as one; a flag counts as two and joined emoji like families count as more.
How much of a caption shows before “more”?
The feed shows the first 125 characters or 2 lines, whichever comes first, then “… more”. Put what matters in that first part.
Are links clickable in Instagram captions?
No. Links in a caption show as plain text, so people can’t tap them. Put the link in your bio, or say where to find it.
Do hashtags count toward the limit?
Yes. Hashtags are part of the caption, so every letter and the # count toward the 2,200 characters.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to Refract or stored.
