How this count works
- Most Latin letters count as one; emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two; every link counts as 23.
- A line break counts as one character.
- Mentions and hashtags count like any other text, the @ and # included.
- In Refract, longer text can be split into a thread.
Your text never leaves your browser: nothing is sent anywhere or stored.
How X counts characters.
X weighs characters: most Latin letters, numbers and punctuation count as one; emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two; and every link counts as 23, however long it is, because X shortens links itself.
A few examples, counted the way X counts them: “Refract” counts as 7, “👍” counts as 2, “👍🏽” counts as 2, “👨👩👧” counts as 2, “日本語” counts as 6 and “https://refract.social/pricing” counts as 23.

Questions and answers.
What is the Twitter character limit?
A post on X can be up to 280 characters. Most letters count as one, emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two, and every link counts as 23.
Do links count toward the limit?
Yes, but every link counts as 23 characters, whatever its length, because X shortens links itself.
Why does an emoji count as two characters?
X gives emoji double weight. An emoji with a skin tone, or a joined emoji like a family, still counts as one emoji: two characters.
Do mentions and hashtags count?
Yes, like any other text: each letter counts, and so do the @ and the #.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to Refract or stored.
