4. Refract

Best for

Writers and small teams on any Mastodon server who post the same idea to Mastodon, Bluesky and other networks and want each version written for its network, then approved.

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who wants a free plan: Refract has a 14-day free trial only.
  • Replying to mentions: there is no social inbox.
  • Posting the exact same text everywhere: the AI-first workflow may be more than you need.

How we evaluated.

We started from every scheduler whose own site says it publishes to Mastodon, not just reminds you to post, and ranked them for people and small teams. The first question was the server: Mastodon is many servers, so a scheduler that only works with one of them is no use to most people. We recorded, for each tool, whether its own pages say any server works, and said so where they do not. Then we weighed Mastodon features (threads, polls, boosts, alt text, mentions), whether it also posts to Bluesky, price, a free plan or trial, and team features. Every fact about another tool comes from its own site, listed under sources, and was checked on 2026-10-27.
Character counting is the other Mastodon detail that trips up cross-posting. Many servers allow 500 characters, but a server can set its own limit, so a count that is right on one server can be wrong on another. Check a draft with the free Mastodon character counter, and see the Mastodon page for how Refract handles servers.
Fedica ranks first for Mastodon depth: threads, polls and boosts on a free plan, mentions in its inbox on Grow and up, and pages that describe server behavior such as the 300 scheduled posts a server lets each account hold. Its pages don't say whether any server works, so confirm yours on the free plan. OmniSocials and Zoho Social come next because both let you connect your own server: OmniSocials says any Mastodon-compatible server works and adds approvals on one plan, and Zoho Social lets you type a server name that is not on its list and bundles 14 channels into its Standard plan at $10 a month billed yearly, though Mastodon needs a paid plan.
Refract sits fourth. You enter your own server, and the composer counts each Mastodon version against that server's own character limit, not a fixed 500. One note becomes a separate version for Mastodon, Bluesky and each other network, and you approve each one before Refract schedules it. It ranks below the top three because it has no free plan and no social inbox, so Fedica fits better if you want a free start or Mastodon mentions in one place, and OmniSocials or Zoho Social if you want more team features. Postiz is fifth: its cloud works with any instance, and its open-source edition is free to self-host, but the cloud costs more to start. Publer and Buffer follow: both say any Mastodon server works, and both have free plans. Typefully closes the list: it publishes to Mastodon, but its pages don't say whether any server works.
We left out SocialBee, which only sends a reminder to post to Mastodon by hand, and Agorapulse, Vista Social, Hootsuite, Later and Metricool, which do not list Mastodon. Nuelink and Schedulin do publish to Mastodon, but their pages do not say which servers work, so they did not make a list capped at eight.

Questions and answers.

How do I schedule Mastodon posts?

Connect your Mastodon account to a scheduler that publishes to Mastodon, usually by entering your server address and signing in there. Write the post, pick a time, and the tool posts it. Keep your server's character limit in mind; the Mastodon character counter helps.

Do Mastodon schedulers work with any server?

Many say so plainly. OmniSocials, Postiz Cloud, Publer and Buffer state that any server works, Zoho Social lets you type the name of a server that is not on its list, and Refract lets you enter your own. Fedica and Typefully publish to Mastodon, but their pages don't say whether any server works, so test yours on their free plans.

Is there a free Mastodon scheduler?

Yes. Fedica, Typefully, Publer and Buffer list free plans that include Mastodon, with limits on posts or queued posts. Zoho Social has a free plan, but Mastodon needs a paid plan. Postiz can be self-hosted for free. Refract has a free trial but no free plan.

Can I schedule polls, threads or boosts on Mastodon?

Fedica schedules threads, polls and boosts. OmniSocials lists Mastodon posts and threads, Publer has a threads composer for Mastodon, Buffer schedules Mastodon threads, and Typefully supports Mastodon polls within your server's limits.

Does a scheduler that says "any server" also work with Pixelfed or other fediverse apps?

Not automatically. Mastodon support covers Mastodon servers; Pixelfed and similar apps are separate integrations. Fedica lists Pixelfed and PeerTube, and Refract's networks are listed in its entry above.
